The Historic Route 20 corridor is a tourism destination that connects communities across the country on one single road. By creating a collaborative network across Route 20, we can share and showcase the route.  Those who seek the nostalgia found on Route 66, can find the historic sites, mom and pop shops, small diners, motels and small-town charm all on Route 20.

In 2021, our organization successfully obtained a State Historic Auto Trail designation for the original alignments of old Highway 20 in the State of Iowa.  We continue to seek out cultural and heritage designations with various local and state entities such as a State Historic Auto Trail or a Heritage Route.

Each state has different and explicit ways to obtain such designations.  This typically involves working with local municipalities, DOT, state legislatures. We wish begin or continue our discussions on how to establish Historic Route 20 in your community.

  1. I recently attended an excellent presentation about route 20 in Stockton, IL. The gentleman speaking said route 20 isn’t as famous as route 66 because it didn’t have a TV show or catchy song. I can’t do anything about TV, but I recommend a program called POV on P BS. It’s self produced TV. The gentleman said there isn’t a song because nothing rhymes with twenty. How about plenty? There is plenty to see and plenty to do on route twenty. If no one can write a song, at least it’s a catch phrase.

  2. Would the Historic Route 20 Association be interested in helping dedicate the 3,365 mile National Medal of Honor Highway across the USA on U.S. Hwy 20 next year?

    If so, please contct me.
